Why is my brain so sh*t?

“Why is my brain so sh*t?”

I’m guessing you’ve asked yourself this many, many times before. I know I have.

For me, I really struggle with memory and remembering things – always have. This is part of the reason why I was SO keen to develop Enhance.

This also makes us distracted. It takes us away from focusing on our own work, our own passions and hobbies, and fixates us on the lives of other people.

Everything is also becoming more convenient and at our fingertips. Fast food, Netflix, Youtube, Porn, video games.

We’re inputting low quality nutrition in our bodies and we’re taking in low quality information non-stop each day.

We’re also really just rewiring our brain circuits for short term dopamine hits. These makes us FEEL GREAT in the now.

We seem to be much less willing to put in sustained effort, and suffer over a period of time to hit those hard long term goals.

We’re also working more and leaving less time to recover and sleep properly which is INSANELY important for clearing your brain from plaque and protein build ups which can lead to neurodegenerative diseases.

So where does this leave us? It leaves us with weak bodies, and even worse, weak brains.

It’s easy to see why we are all looking for a solution.

These are strategies which I’ve been trying to implement as my daily routine. But I’m still constantly learning, implementing and experimenting.

What’s been working for me and what would I recommend?

  1. Exercise, in particular aerobic exercise or HIIT training makes me feel clear and great all day long. This might be because these types of training have been showing to significantly boost BDNF or Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor. This is a protein which is used to help support, repair and grow neurons.   2. To-do lists and scheduling. This is important. Do you have a to-do list and schedule for all tasks you do during the week? If not, you need to sort that out. Every Sunday, I write a weekly to-do list which involves all the important tasks I need to do each day. I’ve recently switched to a fully online/digital format, I use Notion (www.notion.so) which is a free to-do list and work planner software with heaps of features. It also connects to both your phone and desktop for on-the-go changes you need to make, its great.

  3. Timeblocking + get off your phone. Use timeblocking, or set exact periods of time to get into deep work and finish off tasks which you deem important. Remove all distractions during this period. For example, I’m writing this on a Saturday, which is a day I get a LOT of business work done. I will have my Saturday To-Do list with all my tasks for the day, I will then block out x number of hours to complete the tasks. During this time, you want to get off all social media, turn the internet off on your phone or even turn your phone off completely. You will find you can much easily get into a flow state, and begin ticking off each task. This makes you feel great and accomplished at the end of the day.

  4. Meditation. This is huge. Meditation has been shown to reduce anxiety, increase gray matter density in the brain, and may even upregulate genes responsible for anti-inflammation and stress (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5472657/). I also find that getting into this alpha brain wave state, or the calm/meditative states lets me think about problems in my life more creatively. You can download and install either Calm or Headspace, two really popular meditation apps to help you get your 10 minutes in each day.
These 4 strategies are by FAR the most effective for me.

Of course, I also try to eat as well as possible. I also skip breakfast each day and only opt in for 2 meals. I’m a sucker for snacks, I’ve been trying really hard to remove that from my diet as much as possible.

I track my sleep using an Oura Ring too, I aim to get about 7 hours each day. I use the ring to help me track if I’m getting good quality sleep every single day.

Last, but not least, the icing on the cake.
